Applies To: Augustana Properties/Students
This guide explains how student renters can set up gas and electric service.
Company
- MidAmerican Energy Company is the only provider for this service.
When to Request Service
- Request service at least one week before move-in. If you move in on a weekend, you may need to start service a day or two early.
How to Request Service
- Call MidAmerican or submit the online residential service request. Be sure to use the correct address, including “1/2” for upper-level duplexes when applicable.
Will I Have to Be There In Person
- Usually, you do not need to be there in person. If service is already on, MidAmerican typically only needs an outside meter reading to transfer billing.
- If service has been shut off, you must be there in person so they can turn it on and check gas appliances such as the furnace, water heater, and stove.
Who Should Request Service
- Only one tenant needs to request service. The account can only be in one person’s name, so roommates must split costs separately.
What Services Do I Request
- Request both gas and electric service. The only exception is 2842 ½ 7th Ave, where tenants pay only for electricity.
Budget vs Regular Billing
- Utility bills vary by season and are usually highest in winter, when heating use is greatest.
- You can request budget billing to spread costs more evenly across the year based on past usage. When you move out, the account is adjusted if you paid more or less than actual usage.
What If I Don’t Live There Over the Summer
- You can shut off service for the summer if no one will live there, but savings are usually only about $30–$40 per month. Keep in mind that turning service back on requires an in-person appointment, and you will not have lights or AC while it is off.
- If service is shut off, leave the fridge and freezer doors open to prevent mold.
Tips for Saving Money
- Heating and cooling are usually the biggest energy costs. Lower thermostat settings and programmed schedules can help reduce your bill.
- Other ways to save include turning off lights and fans, taking shorter showers, and limiting extra appliances such as mini fridges.
